Anna unlocked the door to her apartment and slowly entered, exhausted from her night. Sighing deeply, she dropped her purse and keys on the small hallway table and shut the door behind her, taking a moment to glance at the eerily quiet street beyond. This is what I get for going to a club with Veronica on a Thursday night… She thought. Ronnie made out with a parade of guys and finally went home with one. I get to come home to our empty apartment 3 hours before dawn, knowing my roomie will be gone for only God knows how long!

The 21 year-old brunette sighed again as she walked down the hallway and into the kitchen. Flicking on the light switch, she groaned in disgust at the looming stack of dirty dishes threatening to spill from the sink. I’ll let Ronnie take care of them when she gets back. If she’s so intent to not sleep before work, I should help her out. Smiling to herself, Anna grabbed a bottle of water from the refrigerator and turned out the light. She headed for her bedroom across the hall, but paused in the doorway when she heard a loud bumping noise.
“What was…” The soft words died in her mouth when she heard a dull grunt coming from the living room. Someone is in the house! Panicked thoughts flew through her brain and she stood there frozen in fear. She heard footsteps coming towards her and willed her feet to move, but she remained motionless.
“Well, lookie here.” A gruff voice spoke from behind her and a tiny gasp escaped her lips. The sound of footsteps came again and the next thing she knew, a large hand had grabbed her around her waist, pinning her arms to her sides. The bottle of water slipped from her hands and rolled across the floor.
“Hey!” She started to scream when a second hand clamped tightly over her lips. “MMMMM!” The gruff voice laughed in her ear.
“Nick, get in here! I found a…special surprise.” Oh god, oh god! What are they going to do to me?! Anna whimpered into the man’s hand, terrified.
A second set of footsteps came from behind her and then stopped, accompanied by a whistle.
“Wow. Drew, you weren’t kidding, that is a surprise. But at least she’s a real hottie.” Drew, the man holding her, moved to face his partner and forced Anna to turn as well.
Anna’s heart leaped into her throat when her gaze fell on Nick. He was slim but at least 6 feet tall, a tight red t-shirt and jeans fitting his frame perfectly. Shaggy blonde hair hung in front of his startling blue eyes and his lips curled into a terrifying grin. But what worried Anna the most was the large butcher’s knife in his hand. She gulped and Drew laughed.
“I think she’s scared of you, Nick.” The blonde man only grinned wider. “Go find something to tie her up with. After all, we can’t have ‘hottie’ here calling the cops.” Before she could see Nick’s response, Drew began dragging Anna into her bedroom and she tried to fight against him. He shoved her backwards against the wall, and suddenly she found him holding her wrists in one hand with the other still clamped over her mouth.
“Listen to me, sweetheart. Unless you want Nick to begin playing with that knife of his, I suggest you calm down and do as you’re told.” Drew stared into her eyes and Anna finally nodded slowly. Maybe if I just do what they want, they’ll finish stealing whatever it is they came for and just leave… “Great. Now, if you promise not to scream, I’ll let go of your mouth.” When she nodded again, he took his hand off her face.
She wanted to say something, to threaten or scream at him, but she figured she should just stay calm so she’d stay on the good side of Nick and his knife. Drew suddenly pointed at her desk chair.
“Sit down.” Trying as hard as she could to look calm and collected, Anna sat down in her chair, knowing that her eyes were betraying her fear. Drew sat down on the bed across from her and pulled a knife from his pocket, though it was considerably smaller than Nick’s. He didn’t say anything about it, simply held it loosely in his hand, but his message was clear. If she tried to fight, he’d use it.
“What’s your name?” Surprised, she tore her gaze from his knife and looked at him. His hair was shorter than Nick’s, shaved fairly close to his head but there was enough left to see it was roughly the same color as Anna’s; a rich dark brown.
“A-Anna.” Her voice came out as a stutter and she cursed inwardly. Damn, so much for seeming calm. Drew smiled and his hazel eyes lit up.
“Pretty name. I used to have an ex named Anna…” Before he could finish his ominous statement, Nick strode into the room carrying a few clean rags, which he handed to Drew, and a large roll of silver duct tape, which he kept while grinning at her. Anna’s heart leapt again, fear overriding her system once more.
“Stand up.” The blonde ordered and she slowly rose from the chair. Nick roughly grabbed her shoulders and shoved her against the wall. She grunted from the impact, the wind knocked out of her. Before she could react, he’d grabbed her wrists and pulled them behind her back, forcing them together, palm to palm. As Anna tried to recover her breath, he began wrapping tape around her wrists. He traveled down her hands and then back up, covering her entire hands with a thick mitten of tape that she would have no hope of breaking free from. Nick turned her around, slamming her back into the wall this time, and causing her bound hands to dig painfully into her lower back. Drew passed him a rag, which was quickly balled up.
“Open your mouth.” Anna began shaking her head and kept her lips firmly shut. “Fine, then we’ll do it the hard way.” Before she could ponder what he meant, Drew grabbed a handful of her hair and yanked on it, causing her to gasp and open her mouth widely. Nick shoved the rag between her teeth and quickly forced her jaw shut over it, sealing her lips together again with a wide strip of tape.
“Mmm! MMMM!!” She screamed loudly into the gag. Grinning, her captor smoothed another few pieces of tape over the first one, muffling her shouts even more. Grabbing her elbow, Drew threw her face-first onto her bed. She started to shriek and kick wildly, but her legs were quickly pressed together and several winds of duct tape wrapped around her ankles too.
Now effectively bound, Anna squirmed on the bed, managing to turn onto her side just enough to see her captors.
“We’ll be back in a bit, sweetheart.” Drew smiled as he walked from her room. Nick stood in the doorway, leering at her bound body.
“Yeah, sit tight.” He finally left, laughing at his own joke. Anna struggled, trying to free her hands but she could barely wiggle her fingers. What am I going to do now?
